LIFE+ Program

The LIFE Programme is the financial instrument of the EU to support projects for the conservation of nature and the environment in the EU, in some cases including neighbouring countries. Since 1992 LIFE has already co-financed 3104 projects, contributing approximately €2.2 billion to the conservation of the environment.

LIFE+, the new Financial Instrument for the Environment, has entered into force with the publication of the Regulation in the Official Journal L149 of 9 June 2007.
Implementing decisions are adopted by the European Commission according to Article 14 of the Regulation. The LIFE+ Committee is made up of representatives from the Member States and makes implementing decisions to assist the Commission according to Article 13 of the LIFE+ Regulation.

The projects financed by LIFE+ must be of community interest, contributing significantly to achieving the overall goal of LIFE+; be technically and financially coherent, viable and profitable; be projects for better practices or for demonstration, related to the execution of the Bird Directive (79/409/EEC) or the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC); and be innovative projects or demonstrations related to the environmental goals of the Community, including the development or dissemination of best practices, technological knowledge, or technologies.
The LIFE+ Programme is an initiative of the European Commission, which is responsible for its management.
